Lobster Rolls

Seeing Ireland through the eyes of the man I love was even better than experiencing it myself. Lance probably hadn’t noticed how much he paid attention to every small detail now, when at first, he’d ignored most of the sites we’d gone to in Dublin, and tried to act like he enjoyed it. Now he savored it all, from the hotel we’d stayed in, to the bridge we’d driven over several times now.

“What’s on the agenda for today?” he asked, as we ate breakfast at the hotel. We’d be spending the latter part of the day with his family, so to get an early start we opted to eat here today.

“Well, I thought we could start with the Titanic Museum and decide what we want to do next.”

“That sounds great, it looks like there’s a lot to do around there.”

“Yes, and I’m really enjoying seeing it all by car. Think of all the things we’ve seen along the way. I mean besides the type of mortar they used to build the walls along the side of the road,” I said, making Lance laugh.

“I’m getting better at driving. Yesterday wasn’t so bad, was it?”

He was so sweet and seeing him enjoy himself was something I wanted to soak up while we were here. I kissed his cheek and nuzzled his neck before I answered. “I think you’re doing a great job. I admit it’s something I wouldn’t have wanted to try.”

We finished eating and were waiting for a cup of coffee to go before we’d decided on a few things we wanted to do that were all in the same area as the museum.

“I like the idea of going to Waterford. I noticed we’ll drive through Kilkenny again,” Lance said.

“Okay then that’s what we’ll do. I know we can find lots of things to do along the way, and if we see something interesting, we can pull off and check it out.” Our coffees were ready, and we were in the car driving the same route we’d driven yesterday while I googled as he drove and hummed along to the radio to a random song I’d never heard. It felt so familiar to be driving around in a different country and enjoying it all. And if the smile on Lance’s face told me anything, I’d say he felt the same way.

We chatted most of the way there, and after finding a parking space we walked around the downtown area before deciding where we’d go. After two museums, a cathedral, and two more cups of coffee we were both ready to go back to Castlecomer.

“Let’s see if we can find dessert to share with everyone,” Lance said as we walked past a small bakery. After deciding on a cake that the baker assured us would be the best we’d ever had, we were back on the road headed to the hotel.

“Are you ready for this?” I asked Lance as we drove through town.

“I think so, but I’m glad we’re back early. I think I’ll go see if Joseph has room to store the cake.
